Free gift, popups and follow-up emails

Collect emails with a free gift, follow up automatically, and remind people who left checkout. All on by default once email works.

1 min readUpdated

Most visitors won't buy on their first visit. A free gift gets their email, and the follow-ups bring them back.

The free gift

A PDF, a video, a checklist or a short lesson, given in exchange for an email. It shows:

  • in a form on your page;
  • in a popup when someone closes checkout without paying;
  • when they're about to leave (exit intent);
  • after a while on the page.

A visitor never sees it after they've claimed it or bought, and the automatic popups show at most once every few days.

Code
Make a free [checklist / guide / video] called [name] for people who [problem], and offer it for an email.

Follow-up emails

On by default once email is connected. After a free sign-up:

  1. 3 minutes later: an email pointing at your main offer.
  2. The next day: a second one.
  3. Days 3, 5 and 8: a short drip.

They stop for anyone who buys or unsubscribes. Edit the wording, timing or switch any of them off in your admin: Email Automations → Automations. Or ask your agent:

Code
Rewrite my follow-up emails in my voice for [who you sell to]. Keep it honest: no fake deadlines.

The checkout reminder

Someone gave you their email, started checkout and didn't pay? One reminder brings them back to the same cart. Only people who gave you their email themselves get it.

Campaigns

Send a one-off email to your whole list (or your waitlist) from Email Automations → Campaigns. Everyone who unsubscribed or bounced is left out.

FAQ

They asked for your gift with their email, every email has an unsubscribe link, and buyers stop getting sales emails. Add your postal address in the config so it shows in the footer, which marketing emails need.

How many emails will this use?

About six per sign-up over a week. On Resend's free plan (100 a day) that's roughly 15 sign-ups a day. Amazon SES has no such limit.
